  Young running back Ernie Davis (Rob Brown) is recruited by Syracuse University and its head football coach Ben Schwartzwalder (Dennis Quaid). Davis excels at his sport, and in 1962, as a member of the Syracuse Orangemen, he becomes the first Black football player in college history to win the Heisman Trophy. Davis had accomplished his feat despite racism of teammates, officials, and the college football scene. But, tragedy lies ahead; Davis has leukemia and dies at age 23.

Gabriella has decided to accept an early admission to Stanford, which will mean a separation from Troy. In the midst of their changing lives, Troy and Gabriella join the other Wildcats in staging a Spring musical that will reflect what is going on in their lives as they reach the end of high school and plan for the future.

When the check does arrive, Lena buys a house in an all-White neighborhood in Chicago, and the Younger family becomes the first Black family to move in.
