This made-for-TV miniseries is set in New York City in the mid-1980s, during the first days of the AIDS crisis in the era of the conservative Reagan administration. The story revolves around a gay couple–Prior Walter (Justin Kirk) and Louis Ironson (Ben Shenkman)–and the Angel (Emma Thompson) who seems to visit Prior through hallucinatory dreams. At the same time, right-wing lawyer Roy Cohn (Al Pacino) is also dying of AIDS and is visited by the ghost of Ethel Rosenberg (Meryl Streep) who he had sent to the electric chair.

Aspiring writer Arturo Bandini (Colin Farrell) leaves his home in Colorado and arrives in 1930s' Los Angeles with dreams of gaining fame and fortune through a writing career. That is when Camilla (Salma Hayek) enters his life. Camilla is a Mexican waitress who also wants more than she has been given in life. There is an attraction between the two, but Arturo and Camilla have much to overcome before they see the light of day.
