  Gene (Gene Autry) and Frog Millhouse (Smiley Burnette) have lost their rodeo jobs and are heading home from NYC when young Ronnie Willoughby (Clifford Severn) hitches a ride with them. Ronnie has no idea that his father, Frederick (Lester Matthews), is serving time in San Quentin prison after being framed by packing company officials. Also joining the group are hitchhikers Joyce (June Storey) and her young sister Patsy (Mary Lee), and, when Ronnie tells them that he is headed to his father's "Rancho San Quentin," they keep mum. Meanwhile, Frederick assumes that Gene and Frog are kidnappers, escapes from prison, and finds them. But, the real kidnappers are on their trail, and the chase is on.

  With Germany being a big international threat just two years before World War II, this movie takes up the theme. Gene falls in love with Senorita Dolores (Lupita Tovar) and helps her uncle, Don Diego (Frank Reicher), move his cattle. Jane's insistence on keeping the cash leads to a tangled web of deceit and murder.
