The story of Felicity (Shailene Woodley) takes place in Virginia in the year 1775–just before the American Revolution. Felicity's family is being torn apart because her grandfather (David Gardner) is a Loyalist, and her father (John Schneider) is a Patriot. As an animal lover, Felicity is also very upset that the beautiful mare Penny, who has captured her heart, is being abused by the owner.
