The Enterprise is sent to a starbase, in response to a bogus signal, and on arrival finds the paralyzed and disfigured Captain Pike, a former commander of the Enterprise. Spock, who had served under Captain Pike, captures Pike and sets off to Talos IV, a forbidden planet. Spock then turns himself in for a court-martial where the story unfolds of the Talosians, masters of illusion.
