Set in 1930s Australia, six-year-old P.S. (Nicholas Gledhil) lives with his aunt and uncle, a result of his mother's death and a long-absent drunken father. His aunt's rich sister returns from a world trip, expresses an interest in P.S., and treats him royally. A court battle ensues when both sisters want custody, during which the boy's father shows up and, though loving the boy, decides he can't care for him. The film won several Australian Film Institute Awards, including Best Picture, Actress, and Supporting Actor.

During World War II, young Marine Sergeant Rebel (Matt Dillon) leaves his unit, goes AWOL in Australia, and falls in love with a cafe singer. Kathy (Debbie Byrne) performs in a Quonset hut saloon where she entertains the troops. One night after a performance, Kathy throws a party and meets Rebel. Although Kathy is married, she falls in love with Rebel. Later she gets a letter telling her that her husband has been killed in action. Now, Rebel tells Kathy that he has gone AWOL and allows himself to be arrested to clear suspicions of Kathy's involvement in his decision to go AWOL.
