Charlie manages to squeeze money out of a House subcommittee giving the Afghan resistance the means to fight off the Soviet invaders. Throughout the 1980s, money was provided, and, by the end of the decade, the Soviets were on the run–thanks to Charlie. Hoffman received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Strong women take care of their weak men in this film about the Southern way of life. Taken from Robert Harling's play, this is a warm-hearted, humorous, and sympathetic look at high and low points of women who see each other regularly at Truvy Jones' (Dolly Parton) beauty salon in a Louisiana town. The story involves M'Lynn (Sally Field), how she deals with her daughter Shelby's (Julia Roberts) failing health, and the relationships among the women–among them are nasty gossip Ouiser (Shirley MacLaine) and recently widowed Clairee (Olympia Dukakis)–she sees regularly at the beauty shop. Julia Roberts received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
