The drug works, and Lowe is gradually awakened after 30 years. He experiences the wonder of life and love, and this success with L-DOPA encourages Sayer to administer the drug to his other patients. Oscar nominations included Best Picture and Actor (De Niro).

Anjelica Huston and Lena Olin played two of Herman's women, and both received Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress for their work on this film.
