You Won't Be Sorryfringedweller 03/06/2007
It's a graceful, quality movie, that's simply beautiful to watch.

It's a tale about social constraints, and how some people always seem to be caught up in them, while others seem to have an inner compass or knowingness that to steer clear of restraints is what's right for them...and in small towns life one often has to pay a price for not buying into prevailing attitudes of the day.

If this is a morality tale, it's at least told in a thouroughly entertaining, 'non-lectury' way.

"Hamlet," the melancholy Dane, is directed by and stars Kenneth Branagh in this–indeed unique–innovative presentation of Shakespeare's classic. Branagh uses Shakespeare's entire text to uncover the layers behind the Bard of Avon's words in his play about Hamlet (Branagh) seeking revenge for his father the king's murder. Julie Christie plays Gertrude, Hamlet's mother who marries her brother-in-law Claudius (Derek Jacobi) soon after her husband's murder. His father's ghost (Brian Blessed) appears and tells Hamlet to be kind to Gertrude but to kill Claudius who had murdered him. Now, insanity takes over resulting in homicide and suicide.

Jean Travers (Vanessa Redgrave) is a schoolteacher in the small Yorkshire town of Wetherby. She leads a quiet life and has never accepted the death of her boyfriend many years ago. She has a small dinner party for two couples who are friends. There is also another dinner guest who was uninvited, but all assumed that he was with one of the couples or with Jean. The next day, the stranger comes to Jean's house, and during a visit with her he puts a gun in his mouth and kills himself. The resulting investigation of who he was and what was meant by the events makes for good mystery and drama. As the party of the prior evening is again shown, the viewer sees the dinner in a completely different way.
