Helen Bronson (Jennifer Connelly) is a young widow who has been caring for her eight-year-old stepson Jacob (Jaden Smith) since her husband died a year ago. To support herself, Helen works as a research scientist in astrobiology. When an alien orb appears in Manhattan, Helen steps in to offer the U.S. government advice on how to deal with its inhabitant, eco-friendly Klaatu (Keanu Reeves). Secretary of State Regina Jackson (Kathy Bates) is very suspicious of eco-friendly Klaatu, but Helen helps Klaatu escape, and she and Jacob take off with Klaatu and try to convince him to spare humans on the planet Earth from destruction.
