This is the first of three films based on Curt Siodmak's novel, "Donovan's Brain." The 1953 version, "Donovan's Brain," is truer to the novel than this one or 1962's "The Brain." Mad scientist Franz (Erich von Stroheim) keeps a ruthless financier's brain alive. The brain takes over the mind of lab assistant Patrick (Richard Arlen) in order to take revenge on those who wronged him.

Although her parents (Donald Crisp and Ann Revere) are cautious about Velvet's training plans, her mother parts with saved money that allows Pie to enter the Grand National Race. Velvet, Mi, and Pie go off to the races with Velvet disguised as a jockey, and they win the big race. Anne Revere carried away an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, and Clarence Brown was nominated for Best Director.
