Shy, high-school student Hal Hefner (Reece Thompson) stutters; however, with encouragement from debating star Ginny Ryerson (Anna Kendrick), Hal joins the debate team. Hal adores Ginny, and to help her win the New Jersey State Debate Championship, which she lost the previous year, he adopts a number of ploys to correct his stuttering problem. One solution: memorize his speech and then perform it to the tune of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic."
