World War II is about to begin, and the former British Consul in Mexico, Geoffrey Firmin (Albert Finney), is drinking himself to death over the state of the world and the infidelity of his former wife Yvonne (Jacqueline Bisset). Yvonne arrives in Mexico with Geoffrey's brother Hugh (Anthony Andrews) hoping to stop his drinking and to talk him into coming to the United States. But, Geoffrey has other plans for his future, and they don't include redemption. This is Malcolm Lowry's autobiography. Finney's performance is great, and he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
