  Drug king Carlito Brigante (Al Pacino) is released from prison, thanks to his lawyer friend Dave Kleinfeld (Sean Penn) getting him out of jail on a technicality, and attempts to live life on the side of the law. He finds work running a nightclub in Manhattan and hopes to save enough to move to the Bahamas and reestablish his relationship with his old girlfriend Gail (Penelope Ann Miller). But, Carlito succumbs to Kleinfeld's maneuvering and kills a Mafia don who Kleinfeld had stolen money from. With his past continuing to interfere with his attempts to find a new life, will Carlito ever be able to get out from under the influence of Kleinfeld?
