This story, which is built around the battle of Iwo Jima, cuts back and forth between the actual battle and the three surviving soldiers–John "Doc" Bradley (Ryan Phillippe), Rene Gagnon (Jesse Bradford), and Ira Hayes (Adam Beach)–of six who raised the flag depicted in the powerful picture taken by Joe Rosenthal (Ned Eisenberg). Rosenthal's picture was used to raise the spirits of a war-worn American public, and the soldiers were sent on a tour to sell war bonds. The story begins in the present when Bradley's son, James (Thomas McCarthy), interviews Rosenthal trying to get information on how the soldiers coped with the attention received from his photograph. Superb directing by Clint Eastwood. An Oscar was received for Best Sound Editing.

Milk is elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and fights for the rights of not only the gay community but senior citizens and union workers as well and, in the process, gives hope to those in need. Among his problems is his continuing battle with another supervisor, Dan White (Josh Brolin). The film won two Academy Awards, including Best Actor (Penn) and was nominated for six other Oscars, including Best Picture, Director, and Supporting Actor (Josh Brolin).
