This film is based on the autobiography of Rocky Graziano (Paul Newman) and involves his rise from the ghetto to World Light Heavyweight Champion. After beginning a life filled with petty crimes, Rocky is arrested and sent to jail where he meets fitness instructor Johnny Hyland (Judson Pratt) who encourages him to use his energy in the athletic world instead of crime. Meanwhile, Rocky's girlfriend Norma (Pier Angeli)–who will later become his wife, number one fan, and support system–helps Rocky gain his self-respect and find success in the ring as well as in his personal life.
