  This story is told in flashbacks as a juror, Stonewall Jackson Fentry (Robert Duvall), is holding back his guilty verdict in the murder case of a young man. Now, the story picks up events from the past when Fentry is taking care of abandoned, pregnant Sarah (Olga Bellin). Fentry falls in love with Sarah and helps her through childbirth. They marry, but Sarah dies shortly after they exchange vows, and Fentry raises her son–until a blood relative interferes.
