A California vineyard worker, Damon Vincenti (Mario Lanza) dreams of singing in the opera and sings in an Italian restaurant where he meets Kendall (Joan Fontaine). Kendall is manipulative and helps Damon launch his career while becoming his lover. When Kendall gets bored with Damon, she dumps him, and he heads to Mexico where he falls for Juana (Sarita Montiel). They marry, but then Kendall reenters the picture, and a love triangle ensues.
