A culture shock occurs when an American schoolteacher, Harriet Winslow (Jane Fonda), travels to Mexico to become a governess. Arriving at the hacienda, she realizes she is in the middle of a revolution and is kidnapped. Now she must choose a romantic alliance with either rebel General Tomas Arroyo or an American writer Ambrose "Old Gringo" Bierce (Gregory Peck) who has befriended Arroyo.
