  Based on Henry James' novel, this is the story of young feminists in the late 1800s who find their quest for equality is not going to be an easy fight. Lesbian suffragette Olive Chancellor (Vanessa Redgrave) engages in a tug-of-war with Basil Ransom (Christopher Reeve) when they both pursue young Verena Tarrant (Madeleine Potter). Basil is in love with Verena, but Olive wants to use Verena's connections to promote the suffragette ideology. Emotions flare when decisions must be made between love and fighting for the cause of equal rights. Redgrave received an Oscar nomination for her performance.

  On a car trip to California, Jim (C. Thomas Howell) picks up psychotic hitchhiker John Ryder (Rutger Hauer), and, from that point on, his excursion turns into a nightmare. John points a switchblade at Jim's crotch, but when Jim escapes, a game of cat-and-mouse begins. John is a serial killer, and he leaves corpses of victims in their cars for Jim to discover, and Jim is framed as the chief suspect in the killings. When Jim meets truck-stop waitress Nash (Jennifer Jason Leigh), the two of them set out, evading the police, to stop John's murder spree and clear Jim's name.

  In this remake of the 1946 film, Jack Nicholson stars as Frank Chambers, the drifter who takes a job at Nick Papadakis' (John Colicos) diner and is soon involved in an affair with Nick's wife Cora (Jessica Lange). Nick has no idea that the affair is going on as Frank and Cora plot to kill Frank and collect on his insurance. But fate steps in, and "living happily ever after" may not be as easy as Frank and Cora think.
