The time is 1982, and the place is New York City where Joe (David Krumholtz) and his pregnant French wife, Anabelle (Clara Bellar), buy into a tenement building on Avenue E on the city's lower East Side. Their neighbors are pot heads, dealers, and thieves roaming the streets. To make their house a home and protect the property, Joe joins forces with the other tenants who elect him president of the "co-op." Joe is asked to evict long-time squatter Carlos DeJesus (Paul Calderon) who has lived in the building longer than anyone else. But, Joe's attempts at mediation meet with little success.

What Toby does not understand is that Bree is really his birth-father, but the two set off on a father-son, cross-country road trip, and discoveries lie ahead.
