First, Kim manages to get Rachel to dump her maid of honor, and then she becomes involved with the best man who happens to be another recovering alcoholic. Rachel's father (Bill Irwin) is divorced from her mother Abby (Debra Winger) and is now married to a Black woman, Carol (Anna Deavere Smith). Since the divorce, Abby has become estranged from her family. Tensions flare over the long weekend as Kim goes out of her way to make everything go wrong and creates one emotional drama after another. Hathaway received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

At the same time, Helene Shaw (Susan Sarandon) has moved to town and wins the role of "Stella" playing opposite Harry. Helene falls in love with Harry–not knowing that Harry's real personality is the exact opposite from that of "Stanley."
