  Based on the novel by Ben Ames Williams, sibling rivalry is the theme of this story about brothers Mark (Stewart Granger) and Joel (Robert Taylor). These two New Bedford whalers find conflicts over individual life choices. Mark falls for Joel's wife, Priscilla (Ann Blyth), and also tries to get Joel's crew to mutiny so that he can take over the ship and search for valuable black pearls. Matters heat up before Mark comes to his senses and gives up his life to save his brother.

When Alridge is kidnapped, states attorney Chick Johnson (John Hodiak) investigates and learns that Allridge's son-in-law Randy Stanton (Cameron Mitchell) is involved in criminal activities, and that is being used to keep Allridge from testifying.
