The last days of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini (Rod Steiger) are the focus of this violent drama. Mussolini realizes that the Italian people are turning against him, and, with his mistress Claretta Petacci (Lisa Gastoni) by his side, he attempts an escape to Switzerland. At the same time, he is trying to hide from the Nazis, the Allies, the Italian government, and Italian freedom fighters–all of whom are on his trail.
