Aging bandit Arch Deans (Gregory Peck) coerces a half-Indian boy, Billy Two Hats (Desi Arnaz Jr.), into helping him commit one last robbery. The robbery is botched and one person is killed. Sheriff Henry Gifford (Jack Warden) is on their trail and captures Billy. Now, Dean rescues Billy but is shot in the leg. They arrive at Spencer's (John Pearce) ranch, and he allows them to stay with him and his wife Esther (Sian Barbara Allen). Spencer takes Deans on a four-day trek to find a doctor, while Billy enjoys a sexual affair with Esther. Griffin does catch up with them, and disaster ensues.

THX, with help from prison-mate SEN 5241 (Donald Pleasence) and TV hologram (Don Pedro Colley), escapes from prison, searches for LUH, and attempts to escape to Earth's surface while being pursued by the robocops.
