| | You Won't Be Sorry | fringedweller 03/06/2007 | It's a graceful, quality movie, that's simply beautiful to watch.
It's a tale about social constraints, and how some people always seem to be caught up in them, while others seem to have an inner compass or knowingness that to steer clear of restraints is what's right for them...and in small towns life one often has to pay a price for not buying into prevailing attitudes of the day.
If this is a morality tale, it's at least told in a thouroughly entertaining, 'non-lectury' way. |

Freddie Highmore (Peter) was so cute in this movie and Johnny Depp (perfecting his accents once again) was great, too. You would never know this movie was connected to Peter Pan, but when you remember this detail, you begin to realize the obvious connections between James Barrie's real life and his beloved children's story. So emotional... everyone must see this movie. |

Gilbert Grape (Johnny Depp) lives with his very fat–500 lbs.–momma (Darlene Cates), retarded brother Arnie (Leonardo DiCaprio), and two teenage sisters Ellen and Amy (Mary Kate Schellhardt and Laura Harrington) in the Grape family home and has more than his share of problems dealing with his very dysfunctional family. When he is not spending time having an affair with housewife Betty Carver (Mary Steenburgen), Gilbert stocks shelves at a grocery store and hangs around with Bobby (Crispin Glover) and Tucker (John C. Reilly). Now, Becky (Juliette Lewis) and her grandmother (Penelope Branning) arrive in town, and Becky opens up Gilbert's eyes to the value of considering his own happiness, which will, of course, disrupt his obligations to family and to Betty as well. DiCaprio was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar. 3 User Reviews

| | Anonymous 10/08/2009 | | A very good movie ... Leonardo DiCaprio is just adorable in this movie .. and I think Johnny depp is to die for. Worth seeing at least once .. if not many time like I have. |
| | fringedweller 03/06/2007 | | I haven't seen this movie since it came out (1993). That's a long time ago, so I can't get down with details, but wanted to say that I felt deeply involved while watching Gilbert Grape, and I found myself thinking about this movie for many weeks afterwards. Definitley worth the time and money. |
| | Anonymous 01/20/2007 | | I assure you that I've never seen this movie, and I've never heard anything about it until now in the tiny summary above, but it sounds pretty good. It sounds adorably funny and some great actors are in it, so I am very sure I will watch it soon. I'll post something about it as soon as I see it. |
