  Multi-millionaire Ezra Ounce (Hugh Herbert) leads his friends and family in a campagne for "the preservation of America's Morals." Meanwhile, his distant cousin, Jimmy (Dick Powell), is producing a show in what Ezra believes to be "the demon world of the theater" starring Ezra's niece Barbara (Ruby Keeler). Ezra's solution: hire thugs to wreck the show, and mayhem ensues.

Now, how will Li'l Abner get out of his predicament of being engaged to two women?

He meets studio head Bennett O. Regan (Gene Lockhart) who wrongly believes that Rooney is arrogant and also wants him to keep his marriage a secret, so he and Rita put on a charade. The movie turns out to be a big success, but Regan hides that fact from Rooney, and Rooney does not discover his fame until he returns home from a South Seas cruise with Rita.
