The PRSF has kidnapped the Mayor (John Crawford) of San Francisco, and Harry and Kate are determined to rescue him. Lots of action in this good "Dirty Harry" film.

Jazz musician Stan Grayson (Kevin McCarthy) dreams he has stabbed a man in a mansion; his cuts and bruises indicate it may be real. His brother-in-law Rene Bressard (Edward G. Robinson), a police detective, tells him to forget it. But, he is determined to find the mansion, and he does. Now, Bressard, after hearing that a murder has been committed there, finds out what really happened.

He is pursued by bounty hunters and U.S. cavalry soldiers, led by Terrill (Bill McKinney) and Fletcher (John Vernon). Along his trek, Josey gains traveling companions Cherokee Lone Watie (Chief Dan George), Laura Lee (Sondra Locke), and her Grandma Sarah (Pauls Trueman) who offers Josey a home in her farmhouse. Just when it looks like Josey will settle down, Terrill appears on the scene.

They live in the town of No Name where Elizabeth is the only woman, and now Ben worries about the other men being interested in her. His solution: kidnap a stagecoach filled with prostitutes. He opens a brothel, and business booms. Ben later gets involved with Mad Jack Duncan (Ray Walston) in creative mining under the town's buildings looking for golddust falling through the floorboards. Not a good idea–the town collapses, and everyone moves on. But, Pardner and Elizabeth remain and try to work out their problems. Lerner and Lowe songs intertwine with the action and include "I Talk to the Trees," "They Call the Wind Mariah," and "Wand'rin Star."

Tadlock (Kirk Douglas), trekking along the Oregon Trail to resettle farther west. This was Sally Field's first feature film, and she stands out in her debut.
