A financially burdened couple, Nora and Arthur Lewis (Cameron Diaz and James Marsden), are given a box, and a mysterious stranger, Arlington Steward (Frank Langella), tells them that if they press certain buttons on the box within 24 hours, they will receive $1 million. But, if they choose to push the buttons, an unknown person will die in the process. Nora does push the buttons, a person across town drops dead, and they do receive the $1 million. They suffer guilt and find themselves in a moral dilemma. Arthur investigates the origins of the box, and the trail leads to NASA, the NSA, government conspiracies, and aliens.

Seventeen-year-old Diana (Evan Rachel Wood) and her friend Maureen (Eva Amurri) have direct opposite personalities. Maureen is a devout church goer, while Diana lives on the wild side. One day, a classmate holds them at gun point in a bathroom at school and demands that they tell him which one he should shoot. Skip ahead 15 years, and Diana (now played by Uma Thurman) is married to Paul (Brett Cullen), and they have a young daughter, Emma (Gabrielle Brennan). But Diana is haunted by survivor's guilt and has never gotten over the tragedy. Matters grow worse as the anniversary of that fateful day draws near, and another problem from Diana's past enters the picture.
