  Maggie Andrews (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) is dying, and her son, Nathan (Max Morrow), has collected tin cans to get enough money to buy Maggie a pair of red shoes for Christmas. A twist of fate occurs when Nathan goes to buy the shoes and runs into frustrated attorney Robert Layton (Rob Lowe)–whose wife, Kate (Maria del Mar), is taking over Maggie's music teaching job–and by story's end, Robert has learned the true meaning of Christmas.

  Photojournalist Jean James (Catherine McCormack) is researching a sensational axe murder that occurred in 1873. Along with her husband Thomas (Sean Penn), his brother Rich (Josh Lucas), and his brother's girlfriend Adaline (Elizabeth Hurley), she heads to a New Hampshire seacoast town–scene of the murder–and finds an eyewitness account of the affair. The audience goes back and forth between the past deceit and Jean's growing uneasiness over her own similar situation: she is convinced that her husband is having an affair with his brother's girlfriend.
