In 1876, Civil War veteran-turned-drifter Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) takes on the task of training the Japanese Imperial Army in the use of modern weapons of the West. With this new expertise, the Emperor plans to modernize Japan by sending his army into battle against the last of the feudal, militaristic samurais. Algren leads the troops into battle but is captured by samurai leader Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe) from whom he learns meditative, instead of violent, ways to deal with life.
