In 1876, Civil War veteran-turned-drifter Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) takes on the task of training the Japanese Imperial Army in the use of modern weapons of the West. Algren leads the troops into battle but is captured by samurai leader Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe) from whom he learns meditative, instead of violent, ways to deal with life.
