This is the final film of the "Hopalong Cassidy" series of about 66 films–a series that featured action, humor, and often better-than-average plots.

The film was also won an Academy Award for Best Writing and was nominated for three others, including Best Director.

Eventually, Savage cares for his men above all else, and the story concerns the stresses of command as the leader becomes too close to his men. Dean Jagger won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor and nominations were received for Best Picture and Actor (Gregory Peck).
