They meet for discussions during which ANC leader Thabo Mbeki (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and anti-apartheid Professor Will Esterhuyse (William Hurt) form a bond, and the hope for peace appears to be possible.

There is no happy ending because Dick now succumbs to malaria, and Mary must take over the supervision of the farm.
