As the 50+ mile race ensues, competition between the couples increases, and the men even use sabotage methods to come out ahead in the race. Comedy reigns as problems are encountered during the race in this delightful story. Great performances, excellent writing, and beautiful landscapes make this film worth watching.

  When Maj. Grau (Omar Sharif) investigates the 1942 murder of a Warsaw prostitute, the evidence points to three German Generals (Donald Pleasence, Charles Gray, and Peter O'Toole). The case remains unsolved, and Grau is taken off the case. Two years later, Grau is in Paris when another prostitute is killed. With help from Inspector Morand (Philippe Noiret), Grau obtains evidence that traps the General, but then Grau is killed. The case continues on until 1965 when Morand confronts the General with the evidence, and then the General kills himself.

A search party finds their remains–along with Scott's diary providing clues to their unsuccessful attempt to make it back to civilization. The fine score composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams later was transmuted to his "Sinfonia Antarctica."
