  This film involves the activities of American newspaper reporter Nick Condon (James Cagney) in Tokyo between World War I and World War II. Condon tries to uncover the "Tanaka Plan"–a grand scheme for Japanese world domination. The Japanese police are on Condon's trail, but he gets help from Chinese-American spy Iris (Sylvia Sidney) who sees this as her chance to settle a score with the Japanese High Command.

  Just before his scheduled heavyweight championship fight, prizefighter Joe Pendleton (Robert Montgomery) dies in a plane crash. The celestial Mr. Jordan (Claude Rains) sends Joe's soul back to Earth in the body of Bruce Farnsworth whose wife Julia (Rita Johnson) and her lover Tony (John Emery) have plotted his demise. They do the evil deed, but Joe has taken over Farnsworth's body and leaves the scene. Now, Joe hires his manager Max Corkle (James Gleason) to get him in shape as a prizefighter. Joe meets Betty Logan (Evelyn Keyes) whose father was framed by Farnsworth, falls in love with her, and straightens out Farnsworth's debt to his investors. This inspires Julia and Tony to plot the killing of "Farnsworth" once again. The film received Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Actor, Director, and Supporting Actor (Gleason) and won Oscars for Writing (original story and screenplay).

  The Chinese bootleg has the opening & end credits chopped off. I guess they didn't want "RKO Studios" to be shown. Worth owning, but buy from a seller on Ebay rather than a high priced seller on Amazon.
