  Maggie Andrews (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) is dying, and her son, Nathan (Max Morrow), has collected tin cans to get enough money to buy Maggie a pair of red shoes for Christmas. A twist of fate occurs when Nathan goes to buy the shoes and runs into frustrated attorney Robert Layton (Rob Lowe)–whose wife, Kate (Maria del Mar), is taking over Maggie's music teaching job–and by story's end, Robert has learned the true meaning of Christmas.

  In Providence, Rhode Island, nurse's assistant Brandi Boski (Mena Suvari) celebrates the possibility of a job promotion at a bar with co-worker Tanya (Rukiya Bernard). Brandi drinks too much, and when she drives home, she runs into a homeless man, Tom (Stephen Rea). The impact smashes Tom through Brandi's broken windshield. Knowing that the accident will ruin her promotion possibilities, Brandi drives the car into her garage and plans to let Tom die there. But, Tom doesn't die and now realizes that he, and he alone, must save himself from certain death.
