Awkward, shy Danny (Noah Taylor) is now in boarding school and his questioning attitude challenges conventional wisdom. He falls in love with Ugandan Thandiwe (Thandie Newton), a pretty, smart, and intelligent girl who, like Danny, has a rebellious spirit. This is a wonderful film of the pains of growing up.

Antoinette eventually marries a "proper" Englishman, Edward (Nathaniel Parker), in order to inherit the family land. But Antoinette's secrets and Edward's elitism and fear of black magic, which is prevalent in the area, brings more tragedy to the family.
