Sarah (Anne Brochet) is a sculptor living a reclusive life who, one day while walking on the beach, discovers an unconscious man (James Spader) who has washed up on the shore. He suffers from amnesia and relies on Sarah for his survival because, although there is a community nearby, she tells him that they are the only two people on the island. The two become lovers, but as the man wants more and more to find a civilized society, Sarah uses desperate means to keep him to herself.
