  Harry Caul (Gene Hackman) is a wiretap expert who hires himself out to anyone willing to pay his prices. He has been hired by a man known only as the "Director" (Robert Duvall). While working on the case, he listens to the recorded voices of Ann (Cindy Williams) and Mark (Frederic Forrest) and hears something that makes him think that Ann–who is the wife of his client–is having an affair with Mark. Now Harry is suspicious of his client's motives for wanting the tapes, and he worries about the consequences. Could he be helping with a murder plot?

Academy Awards were presented for Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor (Walken), Film Editing, and Sound. Nominations were received for Best Actor (De Niro), Supporting Actress (Meryl Streep), Writing, and Cinematography.

Sonny's solution: hold the bank employees hostage–not a good idea because events quickly get out of control. The film is excellent as it touches emotions from comedy to pathos. The film received several Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Actor (Pacino), Director, and Supporting Actor (Chris Sarandon) and won the award for Best Writing.
