Sheriff Mapes (Richard Widmark) does confront them, and the men courageously step forward as a unit and claim responsibility for the act.

The film won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Dustin Hoffman), Best Supporting Actress (Meryl Streep), and Writing.
