  An epidemic of blindness hits a city, and those afflicted are forced into an abandoned hospital by the authoritarian government. Among those quarantined are an ophthalmologist (Mark Ruffalo) and his wife (Julianne Moore) who has not been affected but pretends to be blind so that she can help her husband and the others. As time passes, a bartender (Gael Garcia Bernal) appoints himself "King of Ward Three" and assumes the role of a dictator. Now, primal instincts take over the blind residents of the hospital as their world spirals downward. Will their only seeing person be able to lead them to safety?

  Cody Brewer (Colm Meaney) is a Maine lobster fisherman who is struggling to make ends meet, and his wife Martha (Alberta Watson) and young son Jake (Jack Knight) also have problems. Everything changes when a strange moss is caught in Cody's net, and Cody discovers that the moss has magical powers, which allow it to perform miracles. Cody is relieved when he sees that the powers affect not only the Brewer family but bring good things for the whole community as well.
