After serving a 14-year prison sentence for sexual assault, psychopath Max Cady (Robert De Niro) is released from prison and sets out to get revenge against the lawyer, Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte), who was responsible for him being found guilty. Cady arrives in town and terrorizes the Bowden family–Sam, his wife Leigh (Jessica Lange), and teenage daughter Danielle (Juliette Lewis). Cady's acts of vengeance, including poisoning the family dog and sexually harassing Danielle, terrorize the family, and force the Bowden family into the inevitable final showdown. De Niro was nominated for Best Actor Oscar and Lewis received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
