  Straight-laced, psychology professor Dr. Wilma Tuttle (Loretta Young) accidentally murders a student Bill Perry (Douglas Dick) when he attempts to rape her and then covers up her crime. All goes well for Tuttle–until Warren Ford (Robert Cummings) delves into the circumstantial evidence surrounding the murder and sleuths out the truth.

Margaret needs Eddie's support, but, being a male chauvinist, he is reluctant to come to her aid. Eddie even sides with her opponent and tries to ruin Margaret's name. Eddie eventually sees the light and backs her. Now he's in trouble with the law for election fraud while Margaret falls for him. Got the picture? Not one of Raft's best, but Sidney is pretty good.

  This film is based on James Jones' novel about writer Dave Hirsh's (Frank Sinatra) conflicts when he returns to his hometown of Parktown, Indiana, following World War II and must decide between respectable and decadent lifestyles. His businessman brother Frank (Arthur Kennedy) introduces Dave to schoolteacher Gwen French (Martha Hyer), but, when Dave won't break his ties to local gambler Bama Dillert (Dean Martin) and floozy Ginny Moorehead (Shirley MacLaine), tragedy lies ahead. Academy Award nominations were received for Best Actress (MacLaine), Supporting Actor (Kennedy), and Supporting Actress (Hyer).
