This made-for-TV remake of the classic fairy tale is set to music (by Rodgers and Hammerstein) and is enjoyable fare. Cinderella (Lesley Ann Warren) is treated poorly by her stepmother (Jo Van Fleet) and stepsisters (Pat Carroll and Barbara Ruick). They forbid Cinderella to go to the ball where the Prince (Stuart Damon) will choose his bride. The Fairy Godmother (Celeste Holm) appears and magically transforms Cinderella into the belle of the ball. Cinderella meets the Prince and captures his heart. But, the Fairy Godmother's magic will last only until midnight, and Cinderella must flee the ball. Will the Prince pursue her?

Li'l Abner   1959     3 stars    N/R, 114 min.
Genre: Family / Musical / Comedy
Director: Melvin Frank
Cast: Peter Palmer, Leslie Parrish, Stubby Kaye, Howard St. John, Julie Newmar, Billie Hayes, Joe E. Marks, Stella Stevens, Robert Strauss, Bern Hoffman, Al Nesor, William Lanteau, Ted Thurston, Carmen Alvarez, Alan Carney

Based on the hit Broadway show, this is a delightful film with Al Capp's cartoon characters of Dogpatch brought to life. They are all there from Li'l Abner (Peter Palmer), Daisy Mae (Leslie Parrish), and Mammy and Pappy Yokum (Billie Hayes and Joe E. Marks) to Evil Eye Fleagle (Al Nesor), Marryin' Sam (Stubby Kaye), and Sen. Jack S. Phogbound (Ted Thurston). When the U.S. Congress selects the hillbilly town of Dogpatch to test the Atomic bomb, Li'l Abner goes with his Mammy and Pappy to Washington, D.C., to persuade the government to spare Dogpatch by arguing that Mammy's Yokumberry tonic gives the town value that cannot be replaced. Meanwhile, Li'l Abner and Daisy Mae encounter problems in their romance that, hopefully, will be overcome.
