In an interesting switch, the Hindenburg explosion is examined as a possible result of the action of saboteurs. In this story, the German government assigns Col. Ritter (George C. Scott) the mission of making sure that no one sabotages the Nazi blimp Hindenburg when it flies to New York. Ritter boards the airship and follows leads that include his ex-lover Ursula (Anne Bancroft), businessman Edward Douglas (Gig Young), suspicious crew members, and the captains Pruss (Charles Durning) and Lehmann (Richard Dysart). Ritter believes that a sabotage is planned and tries to get the blimp landed and the passengers out of danger. But, the Hindenburg explodes over New Jersey, and 36 people are killed.

The team uses Ned's invention, their running back rushes over the helmets of the defensive players, and they win the big game against Rutland.
