She recalls stories of "friends"–sociopath Lisa (Angelina Jolie), pampered Daisy (Brittany Murphy), and burn victim Polly (Elizabeth Moss)–who she encounters during her 18-month stay. Susanna works with her psychiatrist, Dr. Sonia Wick (Angelina Jolie), and is guided by nurse Valerie (Whoopie Goldberg). Susanna leaves friends behind when she reclaims her independence and moves out of the institution and on with her life. Jolie won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

That would have been the end of the affair–until two months later when Alison discovers that she is pregnant. She decides to continue the pregnancy and keep the baby. Deena's father, Todd (Dan Lauria), solves everything by engrossing himself in work. Matters come to a head when Deena threatens her parents with a knife. Now, Aunt Judith (Kathleen Wilhoite) steps in and takes over custody of Deena who now tries to deal with her problems, which, of course, include those of her family members as well.
