  Crusading editor Austin Spencer (Sidney Blackmer) wants to prove the injustice of capital punishment and talks his future son-in-law, Tom Garrett (Dana Andrews), into pretending to be guilty of murder. Tom agrees to the plan, and they do not inform Tom's fiancee, Susan (Joan Fontaine), about the plan. Tom is arrested and put on trial. Unfortunately, problems follow when Austin is killed in a car crash, and Tom is left unable to prove his innocence.

They are accompanied by Indian troops and water-bearer Gunga Din (Sam Jaffe) and manage to complete their mission. Later, Cutter and Gunga Din search for gold and find it–in the Thugges' headquarters, and the dangers reach new heights.

The lovely Rebecca (Elizabeth Taylor) pays Ivanhoe's entry fee for the tournament because Ivanhoe had rescued her Jewish father Isaac (Felix Aylmer) from the anti-Semites. But, Prince John's cohort De Bois-Guilbert (George Sanders) wants Rebecca for himself and kidnaps her. Action and chivalry abound, and, by story's end, good overtakes evil.

Jane is attracted to Rochester, and, in time, he returns her attention. All goes well, until it is revealed that Rochester is married to an insane woman who he keeps locked in the attic. Jane leaves, but, when she learns that Rochester's wife has set fire to the mansion, she returns and finds that Rochester was blinded in the fire. Jane convinces Rochester that her reason for returning is love, not pity, and he returns her affections.

To make matters worse, there appears to be a saboteur aboard the Seaview.

  After Mary's (Norma Shearer) friend Sylvia (Rosalind Russell) arranges for her to get the information that Mary's husband is having an affair, Mary heads for Reno to obtain a divorce. When she returns home to New York, she learns that her husband has married his mistress Crystal Allen (Joan Crawford), and now Mary plots to win her husband back. This all-female-cast movie is a classic.
