Paul Scofield stands out as Judge Danforth who is determined to rid evil from Salem, and Winona Ryder is very convincing as Abigail Williams who deceives, lies, and wreaks havoc in order to steal her ex-lover who is the husband (Daniel Day-Lewis) of hated rival Elizabeth Proctor (Joan Allen).
