The Beverly Hillbillies   1993     1 and a half stars    PG, 93 min.
Genre: Comedy
Director: Penelope Spheeris
Cast: Jim Varney, Dabney Coleman, Cloris Leachman, Lily Tomlin, Diedrich Bader, Buddy Ebsen, Erika Eleniak, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Dolly Parton, Lea Thompson

This movie is an updated version of the television show that aired during the 1960s. All the characters are back as is all of the corn. Nevertheless, for "Beverly Hillbillies" fans, this is another chance to see new actors in the tried and true roles of Jed, Granny, and their family and friends. Unfortunately, the script and execution are not as good as the series.

Genre: Comedy
Director: Billy Bob Thornton
Cast: Billy Bob Thornton, Laura Dern, Diane Ladd, Jim Varney, Jeff Bailey, Andy Griffith, Brenda Blethyn, Tuesday Knight, Kelly Preston, Sandra Seacat, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ben Affleck

There are plenty of oddball, red-neck characters in Billy Bob Thornton's follow-up to his highly successful "Sling Blade." The dysfunctional family of Claude (Thornton) comes together in support of Uncle Hazel (Jim Varney) who is accused of murder. But before long, the family groups are warring with each other.

Both Ernest and Renee are captured and shipped to Africa in an attempt to regain the diamonds. Will Ernest save the day? Better than some of the entries in this series.

This is the third in the "Ernest" series, and despite inane stories, the series was popular. In this episode our hero (Jim Varney) is set up by an inmate who looks surprisingly like our hero, and ends up in the bad guy's place.

Unfortunately, Ernest just won't go away, and this fifth entry in the series is for the real Ernest zealots only. Ernest is a high-school custodian when a brain accelerator is used to make him into a genius (for a short time). Why, you ask? You'll have to find out by watching this unwatchable film.
