Based on Russell Banks' novel, this film adaptation features Nick Nolte as Wade Whitehouse, a small-town sheriff in New England who delves into an "accidental" hunting accident to redeem his bleak life–both professionally and personally. He reexamines his life and the relationship he has with his abusive father Glen (James Coburn). Meanwhile, his ex-wife (Mary Beth Hurt) hates him, and his relationship with his daughter Jill (Brigid Tierney) is badly in need of repair. Wade is dating Margie (Sissy Spacek) who is the only one he seems capable of relating to. After his mother dies, Wade's brother Rolfe (Willem Dafoe) comes home to pay his respects, and now Wade suspects Rolfe of being involved in the criminal world. James Coburn won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and Nick Nolte was nominated for Best Actor.

Chicago newspaper editor Cooper (Matthew Broderick) was the recipient of a blow to the head that has left him with short-term memory loss. Cooper and Rollie decide to take a road trip back to Chicago with Cooper's high-school ex-girlfriend Charlotte (Virginia Madsen). The reason for the trip is to sell Rollie's baseball card at a memorabilia convention in Chicago where they will meet more than their share of crooked dealers scheming to get their hands on the card and giving as little as possible to Rollie in return.

And then there is Debbie (Sheila Kelley) who has opted for video dating. Their stories are told in vignettes set amidst the rock music scene of Seattle in this good drama/comedy.
